The final year of the M.Div. degree includes a summative experience in which students engage in practical ministry and receive mentoring as they reflect on their call to ministry. Crown’s Divinity degree is transfer-friendly allowing students to build upon their previous graduate work in ministry or theological studies.  In addition, those beginning their graduate work may be eligible to graduate with both an M.A. in Christian Studies or an M.A. in Ministry Leadership and the Master of Divinity.

General electives accepted for transfer into this degree program should normally fall within the areas of study represented by the concentrations.     What areas are covered by a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree?

    Often considered the primary degree for professional ministry, the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree will require that you study numerous areas as part of your program.  Topics range from theology to history to biblical languages.  Other areas of focus will include spiritual formation, pastoral leadership, pastoral counseling, and intercultural ministries. Students in the program are expected to gain skills with regards to preaching, teaching, organizational leadership, and counseling.  Graduates are empowered to study the Word, study their local context, and lead others in developing strategies to make disciples both locally and around the globe.

    How long does it take to complete the degree?

    The Crown Online M.Div. is flexible in that students with no transfer work can complete the degree in 2.5, 3, or 4 years.  To view these completion plans, please click here.  These flexible completion plans are designed to fit the life needs of our students.   Those working full-time may want to choose a 4 year completion plan while others may be able to dedicate their full-time efforts to graduate school thus completing the degree in 2.5 years.  With our block tuition plan, many students choose the three year completion plan in order to save time and money in their pursuit of the M.Div.

    How often do I have to be on campus?

    The Master of Divinity degree is 100% online and has no requirement for you to travel to campus for any aspect of the program.  Although it is a fully online degree program, you will have a dedicated advisor throughout the program who can assist with various departments.  You will also have direct access to each of your instructors and will be able to reach them via phone or email. While not required, we do hope you will join us on-site for your graduation!  We host several special events for our online students and their families at our main campus in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota the day before graduation.  The actual commencement service is held on a Saturday.

    Do I need to be employed or active in ministry to qualify for this program?

    Individuals applying to the online M.Div. program are not required to be in ministry positions; in fact, many students have been active in other careers and have selected the M.Div. as the optimal preparation for a new career in ministry. Other students are currently in ministry roles and desire the breadth and depth of study the Master of Divinity program offers.

    Can I transfer into this program from another degree program?

    Crown’s Master of Divinity is a transfer-friendly degree program meaning that up to 48 credit hours can be transferred into the degree. Students enrolling in other Crown graduate programs may be eligible to transfer most of their degree program into the M.Div. program.  New graduate students will normally graduate with both an M.A. in Christian Studies or M.A. in Ministry Leadership and a Master of Divinity degree.

    What does this degree emphasize?

    A Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree helps develop the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively understand and proclaim (communicate) the Word of God.  Taught by faculty with practical ministry experience and a desire to equip others for the ministry, students in the M.Div. program will explore the history of Christianity, theology and doctrines, the biblical languages of Scripture, practical ministry strategies, and the disciplines essential to spiritual growth.  Our goal is to graduate students who accurately and effectively communicate the gospel.

    This degree emphasizes the understanding of Scripture in its context as well as its contemporary applications.  Students will have opportunity to develop communication skills appropriate for preaching, teaching and counseling.  Throughout the program, students will not only develop a deeper understanding of Scripture but also be transformed by their studies, projects, and faculty mentors.

    Those applying for entrance into this program will be required to have a completed bachelor degree in any subject.
