Crown’s Communication Arts and Literature Education degree is designed for those who are called to make a lasting impact on the lives of students through teaching. Our program prepares future educators to teach Communication Arts and Literature in grades 5-12 and is structured to meet the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board licensure requirements.

ENG 240X - Young Adult Literature

A study of a broad range of literature for pre-adolescents and young adults from middle school through high school age. This course places emphasis on book selection that considers developmental needs and interests, Christian values, and universal themes, as well as understanding established criteria for Newbery and other literary awards. Attention is given to exploring methods of using literature in teaching.

SED 444 - Secondary Methods of Communication Arts & Literature

A study of the purposes, methods, planning, instruction, and evaluation techniques for teaching in secondary classrooms. The course provides new research, strategies, and philosophies to best meet the needs of adolescents. A corresponding clinical field experience augments classroom readings, discussions, and activities. An emphasis is placed on developmentally appropriate practices, reading across the curriculum, diverse student needs, and multilingual learners. Clinical field experience in an approved site is required.

EDU 316 - Educating Diverse Learners

This course provides a foundational understanding of diverse learners, including students with disabilities, students with gifts and talents, and students at risk. Teacher candidates will explore the challenges diverse learners experience with learning, literacy, and social issues, as well as historical perspectives, educational law, parent rights, and roles within the community. Practical academic and behavior strategies for working with diverse learners will be emphasized. Ten clock hours of field experience at an approved school site are required.

What is the Faculty to Student Ratio?

Our faculty to student ratio is 17:1. We intentionally aim to keep our class sizes small. This allows us to maintain academic excellence and strong relationships between faculty and students. At Crown College, every student is a person and not just another number.

Will my credits transfer?

We generally accept credits from accredited institutions as long as the student maintained a C or higher in the course. To see a full list of what classes will transfer, you can visit Transferology or contact our registrar office at registrar@crown.edu.

What academic resources are available?

Our Student Development Office has a dedicated position to assist students throughout the year. The Coordinator of Student Success gladly meets with students and connects them with various campus resources. The services in this role are designed to increase academic success and build community.
