A Truly Unique Valentine’s Gift – Hearts of Crown Bench
Posted February 1st, 2017
A couple’s initials carved on a tree is a vivid picture of where romance began.
Crown College is a very special place for many alumni. It is where you first prepared for your life’s calling – and – it is where you met the love of your life. Now couples who met at Crown can create that same remembrance (but not on our trees!).
How about a special Valentine’s gift this year?
In 2016, Crown College offered couples who had met at Crown a unique opportunity. Couples could have thier initials engraved in a heart on a new park bench placed on campus. Sixty couples responded and several others asked if we would offer the opportunity again.
Couples beginning their story at Crown College have been a long-time theme in our history, but one such couple took their dedication to the next step.
Bernard Badtke, a junior at the time, joined the effort in moving the college from St. Paul to St. Bonifacius in 1970, becoming a student at our current campus just before his graduation the following year. Upon seeing the campus, Bernard and his sweetheart Carrolle Schaefer decided that they wanted to commit their relationship to God by becoming the first couple to be married at the St. Bonifacius campus’s chapel. Their wedding took place on August 1st, 1970. Carrolle, a ’62 grad, continued to serve the Crown community by working as a cashier in our Financial Office for 30 years.
There are many stories like Bernard and Carrolle’s amongst our vast community. Countless couples find their way to each other through their faith and dedication to the gospel during their time as students. Would you like to commemorate your story on campus as well?
What better way to do so than having your initials carved on a Hearts of Crown bench this Valentine’s Day. The cost of a personalized, engraved heart is $100. Please submit your order by February 28. Benches will be engraved and on campus in April. You’ll be able to come and sit on your bench after the snow has melted!
Deadline is February 28, 2017.
