Bible Courses

DETAILS

To earn an Associate’s degree at Crown, students must take Bible courses.  The State of Minnesota will not pay for these Bible courses.

Because of this, Crown offers Understanding the Old Testament, Understanding the New Testament, and Basic Theology I as competency courses.  These are self-guided courses students take on their own. At the end of each course, students can take a proficiency exam.  Students who pass with a score of 80% or higher on the exams can earn articulated credit for the three courses.

Fees:

Crown offers the Old Testament, New Testament and Theology courses free to AA-seeking students, but students must pay for the required textbooks.  To receive credit, students must also pay a $17 fee to cover remote proctoring while they take their exams.

Competency Credit:

The Old Testament, New Testament, and Theology courses are not regular college courses; they are competency courses.  Crown will accept these competency courses and count them toward your degree, but other institutions may not.  Therefore, Crown cannot guarantee that these courses will transfer to other colleges and universities in the same way that our regular Early College courses do.  However, most colleges and universities DO accept these competency courses if they are part of an Associate’s degree.

In summary, Crown’s competency courses are a great way to earn free credit if you intend to finish your Associate’s degree at Crown.  If you do not plan to finish your Associate’s at Crown, you may want to take these classes for your personal edification, but you should not plan on getting credit for them at another institution.

Graduation 2019 19

Start early on your Associate’s degree

While it is possible to earn your full Associate’s degree during the two years you are eligible to take PSEO/Dual Enrollment classes, it’s A LOT of work.  Students must take 12-15 credits per semester to complete all of the required courses.

With this in mind, Crown recommends that students start working on their Associate’s degree before their junior year in high school.  Students can earn CLEP, AP, or DSST credit in advance.  Taking just 4 classes before your junior year can make for a much more manageable workload while you are an Early College student.  Between these prior credit options and Crown’s competency classes, a maximum 15 credits of proficiency credit can be applied for an Associate’s degree.
