HERE’S TO ANOTHER 50!
50 Year Miracle Campus Celebration
We moved to Saint Bonifacius in 1970 completely on Faith. By taking the leap we have found a blessing. Over the last 50 years, thousands of students have been awarded degrees, many have found spouses, and most have found a special home at Crown. We celebrate this year by looking back with thankfulness for the last 50. We are also looking forward to the next 50, and you can be part of shaping our campus!
THE YEAR WAS
In September of 1969, papers were signed to purchase the beautiful 173 acre Jesuit College, located in St. Bonifacius, for $3.1 million on an 8% contract for deed. Joe Tewinkel’s book, Crusaders, describes the enormity of the transaction. “It was a venture of faith exceeding even those expressions of trust the early pioneers of the College had exhibited. In terms of human resources, it was just plain impossible.”
St. Paul Bible College had never raised this kind of money! There was no strategic plan for fundraising, no business model for a successful capital campaign. These faithful pioneers moved forward in prayer, grounded in the belief that this was the property God wanted them to settle their school on.
God began to move in ways these believers never imagined. Donors multiplied and came forward, gifts poured in and the College was able to make the payments on the deed as well as the operating costs of the new facility. Friends, businesses, alumni came forward with donations of equipment and labor. Joy Hardy, who was an alumnus and part of the staff during the move, described it this way. “There was such a prayerful attitude among alumni and friends. Churches began to support us and promoted us to their congregations. Everyone gave sacrificially and little by little, God multiplied it.”
THE FAITH OF
Many of the staff and faculty stepped out in faith and relocated to move to Waconia and the surrounding areas. Some had homes built and lived on the new Bible College campus until their homes were finished. Dave Grandy was a part of the 1970 move, and he told me families lived dormitory-style on campus with their families. Dave said many of the faculty built extra bedrooms or additions onto their homes so students could live there until the dorms were finished. It was truly a community of faith.
THE YEAR IS
We look forward to improving the campus that was truly a gift to us 50 years ago. Will you partner with us to make the campus the best it can be today?
WILL YOU SUPPORT
As we celebrate the past 50 years, we are looking for practical ways that we can improve the experience that students have on our campus. The following three areas could use partners like you to make the dreams become a reality. This is an important time for Crown; the pandemic, our president’s retirement, a new president with a new vision. All of these changes are an opportunity to not only hold fast to our mission but to go beyond where we are at, into a better future.Ready to Give Now?
