While specific roles and responsibilities of individual VISTAs may vary depending on site placements, Summer Reads focuses on reducing the decline of literacy skills in low-income children over the summer months, a phenomenon commonly referred to as the “summer slide.” Equipped with in-depth training in literacy tutoring practices and given opportunities to add their own ideas and creativity, VISTAs typically spend mornings providing one-to-one tutoring in summer schools and afternoons at community sites where they incorporate literacy and enrichment activities into programming in innovative ways. Summer Reads is an exciting opportunity to experience direct service with children and grow as tutors and mentors. Site placements available in the metro Twin Cities area (including suburbs) and in select communities across Greater Minnesota. There are two types of Summer Reads VISTA positions available in the Twin Cities: 1) Summer Reads VISTA Tutor: Change a child's life this summer! Although each team member shares many of the same job responsibilities, unique areas of leadership define each position. Full-time YouthWorks staff are working year-round to set up the mission sites. All summer staff receive their community information and are trained at the beginning of the summer. For example, YouthWorks does not expect all Work Projects Coordinators to know how to teach home painting prior to being hired. All we ask is that you would be willing to learn. Staff work together to create a spiritually focused and servant-centered mission site. All staff participate in evening programming in a leadership capacity and interact with youth at every opportunity. Other responsibilities include building relationships with community members, coordinating one meal a day and having a weekly check-in time with your supervisor. Staff must be flexible, teachable and willing to grow in all areas. SITE DIRECTOR Experience authentic leadership. Mentor and supervise 3-4 Site Coordinators. Assist them with daily service and ministry projects. Manage finances with integrity and maintain the overall spiritual focus of the mission site. SITE COORDINATORS KIDS CLUB Enable teenagers to experience the joy of loving kids. Facilitate a daily Kids Club and coordinate morning service opportunities. Coordinate daily service activities and see students’ lives change as they experience Christ through service. Support teams with spiritual encouragement and a servant attitude. It allows individuals to become proficient in primitive wilderness camping and Christian leadership. Guides will facilitate groups of up to eight people through Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on weeklong voyages or during a week of Adventure Camp based out of camp while groups take a new adventure each day including rock climbing, canoeing, hiking and more. While on trail, Guides will help groups engage in nature, grow in faith, and share with one another. Guides will be relating with and leading a wide range of people including Christians of varying denominations and non-Christians, as well as various age groups, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Each Trail Guide will facilitate three to five trips per season, in addition to a staff-training trip. The trip schedule will most often alternate between one week spent on trail and the next at the base camp. The off trail time is spent preparing for upcoming trips, resting, and participating in the base camp community. While an enthusiasm and interest in outdoor living is essential, it is not necessary to possess wilderness experience prior to working with Rock Ridge.
