Program Overview

The Social Studies Education major is designed to prepare students for a public and private teaching career in grades 5-12. The program is structured to meet the Minnesota Board of Teaching Social Studies licensure requirements. The student must be accepted into and fulfill all requirements for the Teacher Education Department, as well as the Humanities and Social Science Department.

Students apply for the Teacher Education Department during Foundations of Education. Students will be required to take the MTLE Basic Skills tests as part of their application to the department. Students who graduate from the Teacher Education department are eligible to apply for a first-time full professional license. In order to do so, students will need to have passed the MTLE Basic Skills, Pedagogy and Content tests.
