The Department of Campus Safety at Crown College is growing and adapting to meet the increased demand for personal safety on college campuses nationwide. Crown College has historically been considered a very safe place, yet in light of recent incidents on college campuses, the Crown College administration determined that we should take a pro-active lead in updating our Campus Safety and Emergency Response Plan initiatives.
Last year the College worked with local law enforcement and county risk assessors to perform a comprehensive risk assessment of our campus. The final report gave us some excellent information and ideas to improve our safety and emergency response programs. Recent additions to our security include increased staff hours, a new electronic entry door access system for the main building and student residence halls, traffic speed bumps along our roadways, and added signage to increase awareness of safe speeds and pedestrian crossings. In addition, we have increased our lighting in parking areas at the main building and around our campus residence parking areas.
Campus Safety staff are on duty every day and night of the week and are available for emergency assistance. Our current staff includes the Director of Campus Safety, Todd Willsey, and a full crew of student staff who are selected for their maturity, leadership skills and commitment to serving the campus. Campus safety provides a safe escort service to vehicles and residence areas at night (students, faculty, and staff are discouraged from walking alone in areas that could be secluded or dark), enforces vehicle regulations, and regularly patrols all areas of the campus. In addition, the College works closely with the Carver County Sheriff’s Office and Ridgeview Emergency Medical Services to respond quickly and decisively to situations which may occur on our Campus. Carver County Sheriff Deputies patrol the campus at various times throughout the day and evening hours.
As Director of Campus Safety my goal is that each person who comes to our campus is aware of their role in helping keep our campus safe. Each individual is responsible for basic personal safety such as locking their car door and locking residence doors. You should never leave personal gear (laptops, game gear, purses, cell phones, music instruments, text books, personal handheld electronics, etc) outside of your own personal control. As a reminder, the College is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Each student, faculty, and staff member is responsible to provide their own personal property insurance.
In addition to basic personal safety we expect that each individual student, faculty, and staff member of the College act in a way that considers the safety of others on campus. Corporate safety initiatives include not propping entrance doors open that are secured with electronic access points, not granting building access to someone you do not know who does not have a College ID Card, driving slowly and following vehicle regulations on campus, walking and carrying yourself confidently so that you project that you are not a victim.
Report any suspicious or odd behavior to Campus Safety, a Resident Director, Resident Assistant, or faculty or a staff member. Early reporting of suspicious behavior is a key in preventing and stopping those who would do harm to property or persons at the College. The College keeps a record of each reported safety incident or crime that occurs on campus and provides a yearly report of burglary and crime statistics on line. This report is also filed with the United States Department of Education in compliance with the Clery Act. To view this report, please click here.

It is a pleasure and privilege to serve your needs here at Crown College. Please stop in or contact me if you have any questions or concerns related to Campus Safety.
