One of Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular works, The Pirates of Penzance takes place in Victorian England. Our hero, young Frederic, completed his apprenticeship with a band of pirates and is leaving them for a more acceptable role in society. Frederic hopes to live a law-abiding life and to find a suitable young wife. It seems his goals will be quickly and easily met, as beautiful Mabel appears on the scene early in the show. Mabel is the daughter of Major General Stanley, who readily accepts young Frederic as a suitor.
In true G & S fashion, however, we find that Frederic has not actually completed his apprenticeship, because he was born on a Leap Day. The resolution of Frederic and Mabel's tale, complete with band of British policemen versus band of Pirates, is a rollicking good time for all involved.
This show contains several of the more memorable G & S songs and characters: the Pirate King, the Modern Major General (who is the very model of a Modern Major General), a chorus of sisters climbing over rocky mountain, a piratical maid-of-all-work, and a tentative troupe of bobbies singing "ta-ran-ta-ta."
