Mu Kappa

Mu Kappa is an on-campus club open to all Missionary Kids (MKs), Third Culture Kids (TCKs), and international students, dedicated to building relationships through events and activities.  Our goal is to provide an environment where support can be found during cultural transitions and adaptations. We work alongside other Mu Kappa chapters by joining them at retreats, international dinners, and other events. 

Mu Kappa understands the value of mentorship during the transition into life in America.  Therefore, we facilitate one-on-one peer and/or faculty mentorship by those with similar international experiences.  We provide resources to aid incoming students in acquiring skills and information needed for life here in Minnesota. Mu Kappa values and embraces the special bond between those who have international experiences and we want to encourage and promote the sharing of these experiences within the Crown community.

I was born in Florida but shortly after moved to New Zealand where my parents served as missionaries.  My family then moved to England where I lived until the age of nine.  When we returned to America, I was that “weird kid” with the English accent and the funny idea of what “football” really was.

Now I am a student at Crown College, and I am loving every minute of it. For those of you who also grew up overseas or have traveled, there are so many people here at Crown who have done the same.  I have had great conversations with other students about their international experiences, and it is awesome to hear how God has worked in each of our lives.

I love being a part of the community here at Crown, surrounded by loving, knowledgeable professors and new friends.  There is a huge missions focus here which I really value.  Crown is not centered only on developing our own faith, but reaching out to the lost with the good news of Jesus.  If you end up joining me at Crown, I assure you, you won’t be disappointed.

I grew up as a missionary kid in Burkina Faso, West Africa. When I moved back to the U.S. for college, I was uncertain about how I was going to adjust. Crown has been a great place for me to continue my education, and I have always felt welcome here. Right away I met other MKs when I moved in, so we were able to connect and share our experiences of living overseas. Older MKs came alongside me to make me feel like I belong here. As an MK at Crown College, I get to participate in special events put on by Mu Kappa (our club specifically for MKs, TCKs and international students). It is great to get to know other students who have grown up in different cultures and have similar experiences as me. We can connect on different levels by sharing memories and spending time with people who know where each other is coming from. The Crown community is welcoming to people from any background, and if I had the chance again to choose where to go for my college education, it would be right here, without a doubt!
