Early Childhood Education

Licensure

The AGS Teacher Education Licensure Program offers adults who have already earned an accredited bachelor’s degree in another field the opportunity to earn a Minnesota Teaching Licensure. This licensure program (birth - Grade 3) is approved by the Minnesota Department of Education. Students are required to take the Minnesota Teacher's Licensure Examination (MTLE) Basic Skills, before they can apply for entrance to the Teacher Education Department of Crown College. Successful Completion of the MTLE Basic Skills, Content Knowledge, and Pedagogy tests are required for state licensure.

Career Outlook

Early childhood (from birth until 3rd grade) is an extremely critical time. During this these early years, skill building, formative learning, and social growth occurs. Studies have shown that children who successfully mastered these areas are better equipped to navigate through the societal and academic rigors that all people face as they mature. For this reason, families, schools, and local governments recognize the importance of early childhood education degree programs.

The outlook is great for early childhood education careers. For example, the changing dynamics of the modern household indicate a rising demand for licensed educators. Also, parents are working longer hours and are placing greater emphasis on qualified childcare providers and educators.

While no program can guarantee starting salaries after completion, the U.S. Department of Labor reports that the mean annual salary for preschool-kindergarten teachers was approximately $47,750 in 2007.  It is important to note that as educational research, social sciences, and government funding increasingly sheds light on the many benefits correlated with early childhood education, it is likely that this median salary will increase faster than some of the income estimates for other fields of work.
