Science Labs are Complete!
After months of noise and dust, the Mathematics and Science Department at Crown is now able to approach these disciplines unlike ever before
Completed Biology Lab
This summer marked a significant event in the history of science at Crown College. While it was named the ‘Science Lab Remodeling Project,’ the word remodel is not quite adequate. “Reborn” may be a better description, as the department experienced an amazing transformation.
The former one room that was serving multi-purpose functions is now expanded to four rooms, giving chemistry, biology and physics classes their own labs, along with a separate stock/prep room. The old facility was completely gutted. Some of the updates include: replacing the old floors, new plumbing was installed, installing all new furniture and counter-tops, new cabinetry was put in and the space was significantly increased. The overall floor plan of each room also changed.

One feature of the chemistry facilities are the five exhaust/fume hoods. These are the latest “state of the art” equipment that allows more students to use the facility at one time. The fume hoods are tied into a comprehensive ventilation system, providing our students with the highest level of safety. In each classroom, the architects were worked with closely to come up with creative new desk and room designs, such as gas and electrical fittings in the ceiling instead of the floor, allowing for flexible seating. New technology capabilities were added, with inclusion of the latest Smartboard technology. The physics lab was given reinforced ceiling fixtures, enabling students/faculty to suspend different types of apparatus for use in experiments.

Needless to say, our faculty is excited about the new changes. However, the excitement shown by our students, with the widespread use of the word “WOW,” says a lot.
One of the distinguishing features at Crown has been a strong science program. Yet this ‘rebirth’ and expansion has opened doors to expand science offerings and provide students with new opportunities for learning and research.
