I believe I am in the center of God's will, where "my deep gladness and the world's deep need meet." (Frederich Buechener). College is really where "the action is" in terms of investing in bright young people's lives and preparing them to become leaders in the world. In my case this involves preparing them to teach and perform music and to lead others into worship. I care enough for my students to demand their very best in academics and musical study. I also see the need to invest in their spiritual lives, as they grow in their walk with God. This is the delight of teaching in a Christian college. I did not grow up in such an atmosphere, nor did I receive the kind of care, prayer and encouragement that my students do, so I count it an extra blessing to be part of this community of faith and learning. I also grow in my Christian walk. My testimony is that God is working in and through me right here, right now at Crown, using me to make a difference in my world for Christ.

Dr. Rivard is a certified spiritual director at Restoration Ministries in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He loves kayaking, reading classic literature and painting in oils. He lives with his wife Linda in Chanhassen and has two grown children and four grandchildren.

Dr. Rivard intentionally integrates faith with learning in his music classes, often using musical terms and expressions as metaphors for life. His students learn theory, history, worship and performance, but also how to use their talents to glorify God. Former students have described his teaching as "passionate", noting his care for each student as a whole person. He has mentored many students both in and outside the classroom. With a degree and experience in music education, he understands the teaching field; with a masters degree in trumpet performance he understands the world of performance; and with a doctorate in church music he understands the world of Christian worship. All three disciplines are music degree programs at Crown College. "Teaching at Crown gives me life," he says, "This community of faith and learning is a wonderful place to work, where bright and motivated young people are daily being prepared to make a difference for good in their world."
