Before joining the music faculty at Crown, Dr. Rivard taught high school band in Minnesota and Saskatchewan, Canada for 8 years. For 20 years he was Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Canadian Bible College (now Ambrose University College in Calgary, Alberta). Dr. Rivard has played trumpet professionally in both the United States and Canada, holding the chair of Assistant Principal in the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Saskatchewan, for 20 years. Dr. Rivard is a hymnologist, and as Executive Director of the hymnal revision for the Christian and Missionary Alliance, published Voices in Worship in 2003. He has received the Crown Excellence in Teaching Award as well as the Excellence in Working With Students Award. Dr. Rivard is a certified spiritual director at Restoration Ministries in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He loves kayaking, reading classic literature and painting in oils. He lives with his wife Linda in Chanhassen and has two grown children and four grandchildren.
Dr. Rivard intentionally integrates faith with learning in his music classes, often using musical terms and expressions as metaphors for life. His students learn theory, history, worship and performance, but also how to use their talents to glorify God. Former students have described his teaching as "passionate", noting his care for each student as a whole person. He has mentored many students both in and outside the classroom. With a degree and experience in music education, he understands the teaching field; with a masters degree in trumpet performance he understands the world of performance; and with a doctorate in church music he understands the world of Christian worship. All three disciplines are music degree programs at Crown College. "Teaching at Crown gives me life," he says, "This community of faith and learning is a wonderful place to work, where bright and motivated young people are daily being prepared to make a difference for good in their world."
