Before Crown, what did you do?
Prior to Crown, I taught at Northwestern College for 12 years (part-time for 5, full-time for 7). My background also includes teaching at St. Thomas University and various Community Colleges, bookkeeping, and working for IBM as an Industrial Engineer
I grew up in a strong Christian family, surrounded by the love of my parents and sister. I accepted Christ at a very young age, but truly made Him Lord of my life at a summer camp in 7th grade. My college years were a time of great spiritual growth as I wrestled with where God was leading me and how to best serve Him. The rest of my life has been a wonderful spiritual journey. Over the years, it has been enlightening to see God's hand in my life and how He weaves people and circumstances together to strengthen and shape me into the person He created me to be.
Favorite Bible verse? Proverbs 3:5, 6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Hobbies, Interests, Affiliations?
I love to spend time with my family! Now that my girls are grown (Brittany is out of college and Bethany is a college junior), I cherish the times when we are all together. My husband and I enjoy traveling in the summer and we play golf together whenever possible. At home, I love to read or do puzzles.
What do you enjoy most about teaching at Crown?
I love the people I work with! They have a passion for students and truly enjoy what they are doing. We are able to support, encourage, and pray for one another, which makes it a wonderful atmosphere to teach in.
How do you define "Academic Excellence?"
Academic Excellence for me is setting high standards for students, and then challenging them to push themselves to reach and even exceed those standards.
What would your students say about taking your classes?
Most students are not excited to take my classes! For many, it is the last math class they will ever need to take, and their goal is to survive the experience. My goal, on the other hand, is to alleviate some of the math anxiety present in so many students and to make their final math experience a positive one. I want them to experience success in a math setting, and to realize that with work, they really can "do math". Students come away from my classes with a better appreciation of the subject and a realization that math is truly something they will use in everyday life.
What would you say to parents of prospective students about having their son/daughter at Crown?
Crown is a wonderful place to send your son/daughter. Every faculty and staff member is committed to helping them succeed. More importantly, they are committed to helping them grow in their relationship with Christ and to discover God’s calling on their life. Faculty and staff will come alongside your student as mentors and advisors, and encourage their spiritual growth as much as their academic growth.
