Post-Season Accolades Roll In for Crown College Men’s Basketball

Luke Herbert, Crown’s head basketball coach, was recognized by his peers as the UMAC Coach of the Year; Bryce Williams voted UMAC Player of the Year.

St. Bonifacius, Minn. — The preseason coaches poll had Crown’s men’s basketball finishing at the bottom of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). With only two returning starters from the previous year’s squad, it made sense. But, with the help of some key transfers and a stellar recruiting class, Crown went on a run that took them to their first-ever UMAC Championship game. Despite losing in that bid for the NCAA Division III playoffs, the team was honored recently with several significant post-season awards.

Luke Herbert, Crown’s head basketball coach, was recognized by his peers as the UMAC Coach of the Year for his outstanding coaching during the past season. Under his leadership, Crown went on to its best finish of their NCAA era, including posting a 8-6 mark in the conference.

Herbert came to Crown via Minnesota State Moorhead and Covenant College (GA) and has increased his winning percentage in each year of his four year tenure as Crown’s head coach.

In addition, Crown’s star guard, Bryce Williams (Moundsview, Minn., Spring Lake Park), received multiple accolades for his stellar play during his sophomore year. Conference coaches voted Williams UMAC Player of the Year. He was also named to the D3hoops.com 2014 All- West Region Team, voted Third Team All-Region by the NCAA Division III West Region, and named to the DIII News Honorable Mention All-American team.

Williams averaged 20.4 points per game, while shooting 41.8% from the field, 36.2% from three point range, and 78% from the free throw line. He made an astounding 80 three-point baskets during the course of the season, placing him 12th in all of Division III. In addition to his scoring, he was second on the team in three categories contributing 5.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
