Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Is Crown College accredited?

Yes, the college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association, and is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

2. When are classes offered?

The education classes are Monday or Thursday nights from 6:00-10:00.

3. Does Crown College offer financial aid?

Yes, financial aid is available for Crown students who are US citizens or legal aliens.  Since licensure students already have a bachelor's degree, only loans are available.  If a student is already licensed to teach, the government will not grant student loans for another license.

4.  How much does it cost?

Tuition is charged by semester credit.  Each credit is $241.  In addition to tuition, textbooks and resources are $50 per credit.  In the fall and spring term there is a registration fee of $50.

5.  What credits can I transfer in?

College credits earned from a regionally accredited institution can be transferred if a "C" or higher was earned.  No methods or student teaching classes will transfer unless you are already licensed in that area.  Some of the education classes cannot be transferred unless they have been taken recently.  Our enrollment office would be glad to look at your transcripts and give you a tentative evaluation with a tentative timeframe to complete your degree.

 6. How long will it take to get licensed?

The licensure program is arranged that you can take classes at your pace.  If you transfer no credits toward the program, it will take at least 2.5 years.  With classes transferring, it will take less time.  In addition to completing the classes, you will also need to take and pass the Praxis I and II tests and submit other paperwork to the State to actually receive your teaching license.

7. How much time is involved?

The general guide is for every hour in class, you will have 1-2 hours of homework.  Since each class is four hours, you will average 4-8 hours of homework each week.  In addition to homework, some of the classes will have a field experience.  This will involve hours at a school.

8. What do I need to do to get accepted?

Licensure students go through two acceptance processes.  First, to be accepted to the college, you must complete all your enrollment items: application, application fee, and all college transcripts.  Then your file will be processed for acceptance by the AGS Enrollment Office.  You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5.  If you do not have that, the Teacher Education Department will meet to discuss your acceptance.  After your first term you will apply to the Teacher Education Department.  That process involves sending in professional references, writing a resume, registering for the Praxis I, and interviewing with the Teacher Education Department faculty.

9. When can I start?

Because you take classes at your pace, you have some flexibility about when you want to start.  We have two preferred starting times: fall or spring semester.  The fall term begins in mid-August to early September.  The spring semester starts at the beginning of February.  You will need to attend the orientation before starting class.

10.  When do I pay for class?

Payment should be made when you register for classes at the beginning of each term.  A payment or payment plan must be arranged with the Billing Office.  Each class must be paid for before you begin.  Accepted payment can be credit card, cash, or financial aid.

11.  Am I too old to go into the teaching field?

Unless you are already retired, you are never too old to go into the teaching field.  The life experiences you bring will enrich your classroom.

12.  Will I be able to get a job since my Bachelor's degree is not in education?

Yes!  With the No Child Left Behind legislation, teachers who have a bachelor's degree in a content area and education as a license addition will be perceived as better prepared to teach the content area in both elementary and middle school if they so choose.

13.  Can I take any classes online?

If you are missing any of the prerequisite classes (English Composition, Math, Speech, and General Psychology) or the middle school content class(es), you can complete those through our online program.  The only class in our teacher education program being offered online is Personal & Community Health.
