Spring 2007 Deeper Life conference
with Sunder Krishnan

Living as a Called People in a Driven World

The Deeper Life conference that occurs every semester at Crown has always challenged students to press into a life saturated by God's presence. This year Reverend Sunder Krishnan, senior pastor at Rexdale Alliance Church in Toronto, voiced the importance of seeking God's presence in the midst of a driven, fast-paced world. A driven MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) graduate himself, Reverend Krishnan's messages focused on the theme "Living as a Called People in a Driven World" and met many in their need to understand the balance between activity and attentive stillness before God. One student, particularly vigorous academically and otherwise, affirms that through Rev. Krishnan God "hit the nail right on the head" for her. Many members of the Crown community appreciated his regular mixture of heart and mind in expressing a passion for God with unusual intellect.

Presidential Intern Patrick Wood was blessed with the privilege of transporting Reverend Krishnan between the airport and daily hotel runs. The experience of constant interchange with Rev. Krishnan throughout the week beautifully captured a principle he emphasized in one of his messages: "Education is meant to be experienced in the context of relationships." Reflecting on Rev. Krishnan's words, Patrick Wood states that this principle of education "proved true just over those few hours we spent together in personal dialogue. My learning in Christ and desire for Him heightened considerably with this relational education." This dialogue affirms the importance Crown College places on the need not only to love God with heart and mind, passion and intellect, anointing and education, but doing so in the context of Christ-centered community between professors and students. We thank Rev. Krishnan for spending three days with the College to refresh us in such truths.

About the speaker

Reverend Krishnan, born into an orthodox Hindu family and raised in New Delhi, received his undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1967 and later obtained his master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston in 1969. While in his first year of undergraduate study in New Delhi, Reverend Krishnan heard about Jesus Christ from the ministry of Youth for Christ. He became involved with Youth for Christ in New Delhi then later was a part of Campus Crusade during his master's work in Boston. When Revered Krishnan took a position at Atomic Energy of Canada in Toronto in 1969, he began worshipping at Rexdale Alliance Church. At that time he served as an adult Christian education teacher as well as being a member of the executive committee and, later, a member of the board of elders. He was ordained in 1982, and took the senior pastor position at Rexdale Alliance in 1997. In April 2000, Reverend Krishnan was given an honorary doctorate from the Canadian Bible College and Theological Seminary in Regina, Canada.
