Passionately Pursuing Christ and Chemistry
Dr. John Nelly—A Lasting Legacy
With firm diligence, Dr. John Nelly pursued an active love for the Lord with his all of his mind, heart, and soul. His legacy as a Christian chemist reflects his character and intellect and provides an inspirational example of the type of leaders Crown College aims to develop for the future.
Dr. Nelly embraced his calling to serve the Lord in the field of chemistry, giving thirty-one productive years to Mobile Oil in East Chicago, IL, where he demonstrated diligence and the love of Christ to his colleagues. Prior to his tenure at Mobile, Nelly earned his undergraduate degree from Penn State University, and later earned his Ph.D. from the prestigious University of Chicago, where he later served as an adjunct professor.
In addition to his love for chemistry and science-based mathematical puzzles, Nelly was an avid reader and a train enthusiast. He fostered these passions in the Pennsylvania Railroad Association and at the University Club of Chicago. Even with the many hours Nelly spent in his field of chemistry, he was a well-rounded, fascinating man who found time to enjoy his family and friends, while still developing his many special interests.
Characterized by his sharp intellect and generous heart, Dr. John Nelly was a committed member of his church, both in Pennsylvania and in Chicago. He belonged to the Men’s Prayer Organization at Grace Baptist Church in New Bethlehem, PA, and also attended A.W. Tozer’s Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Chicago. His pastors describe him as “a man with a love for Christ and His Church,” while continuing to serve God as “a generous, frugal, sweet man with a great intellect.” Nelly was faithful in supporting his church, with a simple and direct approach to serving the body of Christ.
As a continuation of his faithful service and devotion to the Church during his life, Dr. Nelly’s legacy will live on with his generous gift to Crown College. He demonstrated what it means to be a man of integrity and focused on developing his mind and heart to further the mission of Christ—a mission that Crown will continue to pursue. As the College aims to develop future leaders focused on loving the Lord with their hearts, souls, and minds, Nelly will be an example to future generations of Christians. The College is grateful for Dr. John Nelly’s estate gift of $433,000, which allows the passion and commitment of one man to be passed on to generations to come.
