Chapter 35: Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEAP)

You may be eligible for these benefits if you are a spouse or dependent of a veteran who:

  • is totally and permanently disabled from a service-related injury.
  • died due to a service-related injury.

Documentation Process

Please complete and submit the appropriate forms below (originals or copies) to the Registrar's Office at Crown College.

If you have never applied for benefits, complete:

  1. Application for Survivors and Dependents Educational (22-5490)
  2. Request for Enrollment Certification

If you have previously used your benefits at a different institution or have not attended Crown for one year or longer, submit:

  1. Change of Program or Place of Training (22-1995)
  2. Request for Enrollment Certification

If you received VA benefits within the past year at Crown College, submit:

  1. Request for Enrollment Certification

Education Benefit Information

You will receive a stipend for personal use of $860 per month for up to 45 months (as of October 1, 2006), if you are a full-time student. Your benefit will be reduced proportionately for part-time enrollment. Visit the VA website for information on current rates.

Generally, spouses must use this benefit within 10 years from the date their eligibility was determined by USDVA. Children must use the benefit between ages 18-26.

Your benefit affects financial aid in the same way as scholarships or other need-based education resources. Chapter 35 benefits do not affect your eligibility for Federal Pell of Minnesota State grants.
