The Teacher Education Department prepares teachers for Christian leadership in both public and private schools. In addition to housing the early childhood and elementary education programs, the Department coordinates and provides core courses for teacher licensure programs housed within other departments of the College. These include the Music Department and the Humanities and Social Science Department.
All teacher licensure programs are regularly reviewed and approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching, so graduates of these programs receive the necessary credentials to teach in both public and private schools. Additionally, Crown College is a charter member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and the Department assists individual students who wish to obtain ACSI certification to teach in affiliated Christian schools.
Students who complete Crown's teacher education programs will have demonstrated the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions for effective teaching. Each student will have demonstrated competency in:
- planning, conducting, and evaluating lessons
- in developing and maintaining an effective learning environment
- and in guiding the academic and personal growth of students.
The foundational studies in Bible and theology, along with a strong academic program and practical school experiences have for twenty years produced strong candidates for successful teaching in the United States and around the world.
All persons completing approved teacher education programs in Minnesota institutions and seeking initial teaching licensures are required to successfully complete the Praxis I, or the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in reading comprehension, writing composition, and mathematics. Students must take this test prior to admission to this department, usually in their sophomore year. Advanced transfer students are admitted without having taken the PPST, but they must fulfill the test requirement immediately upon enrollment in the program. Persons are allowed to retake the test to achieve passing scores as established by the Minnesota Board of Teaching.
The State of Minnesota requires a background check of all persons seeking teacher licensure, upon completion of the preparation program and prior to being issued the teaching licensure. A criminal record does not automatically disqualify a candidate from licensure, but candidates must consider whether their backgrounds would jeopardize their receiving the licensure. Additional information may be required by the Board of Teaching to determine whether or not to grant the credential.
